Does our solar system have a “tired star” at dangerously close distance?
We know that if a tired star loses its critical mass of fusion, it expands as huge hot plasma of hydrogen burning melting planets
all along its route, them take enormous room throughout many solar systems, and are even visible from intergalactic distances.
So my question is, what is the speed of expansion of such a star,
and does life time to escape toward opposite direction in space, when it occurs?
This kind of swollen star close to exploding is called a “red giant”. The closest is Betelgeuse, in the constellation Orion. It shines about 135,000 times brighter than the sun and is about 640 light years away. When it goes supernova – when it explodes – it will be easily visible to us during the daytime. At night it will be bright enough to read by! This could happen any time, but probably not in your lifetime or mine.
To your direct questions, the fastest expansion measured so far is about 9000 miles each second. Our fastest spacecraft ever moves at about 400 miles each second. So, no we wouldn’t be able to outrun a supernova.
Betelgeuse is about 64 times too far away to be dangerous to us. It would be a really cool light show, though.
